Enjoying wine tourism activities in the Empordà has become a mandatory stop if you visit the area. Whether or not you are a wine lover, it is a world full of curiosities that will surely capture your attention from minute one. Therefore, today we invite you to discover a little more about this interesting sector, characterized by its natural landscapes, its nearby local producers and its wide options in terms of diversity of experiences .

You may be wondering ... but what is DO Empordà ? Well, the Empordà Denomination of Origin is a quality certification label that is governed by the Catalan wine law. Through this certification, parameters are established that control the entire process of production of its cellars, to guarantee the origin and quality of its wines. The prestige and recognition of our wines come from many years of passion and winemaking tradition in our region, which finds its beginnings in Roman times, and which over time has been professionalizing and specializing in the red wine sector , white and pink.

The area that encompasses DO Empordà production is made up of 55 municipalities, all located in two regions, the Alt i Baix Empordà , in the extreme northeast of Catalonia . Curiously, although both regions are geographically delimiting, the two producing areas that are included in the DO Empordá are separated by the beautiful bay of Roses .

The routes between the impressive landscapes of the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees are designed to delve into the great gastronomic and oenological culture of the region. You will discover our red wines characterized by their body and harmony in the mouth, and white wines, with fresh and aromatic flavors. The rosé, cherry colored, are famous for their personality and for having a moderate alcoholic graduation. In addition, the famous variety of natural sweet wine, known as " Garnatxa de l'Empordà ", made with the grape variety that gives it its name, the Garnatxa del Empordà, so characteristic of our land. Also the “ Moscatell de l'Empordà” is a renowned sweet wine, ideal to accompany any type of dessert!

Throughout the year, all kinds of activities are offered: Concerts between vineyards, dramatized visits to villages dedicated to viticulture, workshops with sommeliers specialized in DO Empordà wines, family veremas, bike tours of vineyards finished with a tasting of wines ... endless opportunities are offered to enjoy Empordà and its wines!

To facilitate your visit and not miss a single detail, we recommend that you visit the DO Empordà Wine Route following the three roads into which it has been divided, the junction of which crosses the DO Empordà area from north to south, and allows to know all its regions and particularities.

Below we offer you a small brushstroke for each section of the route designed by the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona :

The Empordà Wine Trail

This route is located in Alt Empordà , the northern region of the wine region. It is the area where there are more producers, with a great variety of production wineries , all of them with their own guided tours and a wide variety of activities related to the world of wine.

The path draws a path from the coast to the mountains, passing through the Cap de Creus Natural Park and the Albera Nature Reserve , both of great interest. A touch of the sea you can visit the coastal vineyards, where the Coll de Roses Wine Center is also located, which offers an interactive experience about wine and its history. The Alt Empordà path crosses its district capital and Dalí's hometown, Figueres , where the Dalí Theater-Museum , the most important surrealism museum in the world, is located. If you are interested in galleries, the Perelada Wine Museum contains a wine exhibition of great historical value that is worth visiting. You can also discover the three monasteries from the Romanesque period, which centuries ago were preparing wine.

The wine and cork path

On this path, which runs through the south of the DO Empordà area, you will discover the process of creating cork stoppers, and their relationship and importance to Empordà wine. You will be able to see and understand in first person how the process of making the corco is, from the wonderful views of the Sierra de Les Gavarras covered with enzymes, passing through the Cork Museum of Palafrugell .
